While We Were Shopping is a my response to the genocide in Gaza. The project is made of long watercolor painted backgrounds (50 inches or more) and hand drawn animation frames layered to express a traditional animation film quality. I chose analogue techniques as much as possible because the slow labor intensive pace allowed me to deeply reflect on the subject matter of the film and feel more compassion toward humanity. Part under the camera improvisation, part carefully designed exposure sheets, and part paintings and drawings, it is a short film that symbolically compares the conditions in Gaza with those of our lives.
